Justin Beswick New Venture Creation

I spent a day and a half attending a workshop on ‘New Venture Creation‘ - presented by Stephan Lemprecht of Venture Solutions… The name ‘Stephan Lemprecht’ sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place my finger on where I’d come across it before..However, I had a positive association with the name, so I figured the workshop would be worth attending.. So off I went to the University of the Western Cape. On my arrival I met up with my fellow peers for tea and coffee before the day’s program kicked off… Continue

Barrie Bramley The World of Tomorrow (If The Internet Disappeared Today)

Some really fun stuff to think about how much the world has changed. While there’s a lot that’s funny, there is a reality check and reminder at ho… Continue

Igno van Niekerk The Safe

Is a safe supposed to be locked? Not if it is the safe called potential... The greatest gift a teacher can give is the code that will open the safe. For every learner, the code may differ, and therefore the teacher who believes in the learner is the persisting, caring and resolved opener of the safe. It's all about cracking the code of the mind. A great place to start is to build the self-esteem of the learner. It's not through tests and exams, but rather through belief and… Continue

Pamela Is the recession over or is it just summer in Cape Town?

A temporary economic decline during which trade and industrial activity are reduced - or for us in Cape Town is it just an excuse to take an extended holiday. We've survived a blustery Winter which each year seems to extend itself beyond the seasonal border...but climate change is not part of this discussion...how many months (okay i'll be realistic and convert it to weeks) are we as Capetonians prepared to spend on work hours and... - I have wondered what our counterparts, associates and client… Continue

Jon Foster-Pedley Are business plans a waste of time?

Yes they are - according to David Kirsh and Brent Goldfarb of the University of Maryland after studying 700 start-ups - see the short video. “Spending time and energy tweaking your business plan is a waste of resources. It’s a limited-use document that will in no way substitute for the hard work of actually building a business. You’re better off investing in your idea, your social network, finding potential i… Continue

Pearl Seigel Netiquette ...

Netiquette 1. What is netiquette? Netiquette is web 2.0 business social media etiquette. It is how to comunicate in the virtual world. For example using CAPS is considered shouting! 2. Why is netiquette important? The www is a global public forum. Any person, business, bot or spider anywhere can read what you say. Unlike, face to face meetings where others can see your body language and hear your voice – for web based communicationContinue

Jon Foster-Pedley Bell curve - schmell curve!

I can't believe it but it's true - we really do still use the bell curve to manage assessment at schools and universities. OK - I get the logic about rigour and standards, but it is a dumb, old world logic in my view. My thing about the bell-curve is this - 1 standard deviation (1 sigma - 68% of the population) are deemed 'average' so only 16% can possibly be A's... and isn't it mainly the same driven few who obsess for the A's - so everyone else stops trying or believes they can't do well... an… Continue

H. Peter Mead Strategy Planing RIP

Worth reading I think. From the FT.. Living strategy and the death of five-year plans Published: 2009/10/28 06:42:31 AM IS STRATEGY dead? Chief strategy officers will deny it. Some strategy consultants may reject the idea, too. But, right now, markets are unpredictable. The economic outlook is uncertain. The world has changed. If old-style strategy formulation is not exactly dead, then it is hardly in the best of health. For months, many leadership teams have had only one strategic goal in… Continue

Pearl Seigel Would you hold hands with a total stranger?

Symbolically Speaking and literally speaking I have felt comfortable speaking to total strangers. I’ve met many interesting people and learnt a lot about different values and cultures. Because of my interest in business I’ve also learnt about the entrepreneurial spirit that so many South African’s possess. But, back to holding hands with total strangers ... Being in a wheelchair, often the helping hand comes from behind. So I don’t even see the stranger. Yet again I’ve met some really interest… Continue

Eshaam Rabaney Observations on Silicon Cape’s Social Media Success

Was it the 140 blogs mentioning the phrase “Silicon Cape”, perhaps the ±140 average views of the Silicon Cape video footage or the hundreds of #SiliconCape tweets, tweeting its way to a GLOBAL trending topic? Whichever it may have been, Silicon Cape has impressively embraced social media less than most, gathering over 1500 participants to its community, 470 followers on twitter and 206 fans on FaceBook in the process.
