The Sunday Times published their list of the Top 100 schools in SA on 18 Oct. I thought their criteria for the list were up the pole. So I wrote to them and told them so. You can read my edited letter here.

Assuming it will be free (covered by taxes so I don't have to pay) then I want to live in Finland just for the privilege (as I see it) of high speed connectivity. Wow.

Good point, Graeme. And what about those of us in education? Although we should go up the points scale every year, I'm still not sure how that links in with inflation. Do the scales take inflation into account - I don't think they do, which effectiv…

I have to say, I hate the 'pink' marketing strategy. Just because I'm a woman does not mean I want to buy a screwdriver set all in pink, or a notebook/ laptop, or a kettle.... Why should marketing be so stereotyped? I find it insulting that the 'bes…

@Mashable already does that.... I find his tweets a bit overwhelming at times, but when I need help, he is amazing! He regularly sends out tips for newbies, which even I can learn from, although I've been on twitter for a while now.

Hi Nicole
Thanks for the positive memories. What are you doing now?
I've at last made the long-overdue decision to stop swimming against the stream and have resigned from the School of Education as from the end of June. I'm going to spend more time teaching courses at the Business School as a consultant - something I've been doing more and more of for the past 5 years with great pleasure.
All the best.
Chris

Why washing your hands may be bad for you

This is the text of a lecture I gave this evening to a group of our school's top academics.

This evening we’re going to be talking about a rather unusual topic – something that is rather close to my heart. Actually, it’s rather close to YOUR heart, as well as mine. We’re going to be talking about parasites.

Now why on earth would I choose a topic like this to discuss? When I was at university, I had three weeks of lectures on parasites and our lecturer started off by telling us how ubiquitous… Continue

New pass rates for grades 1-7: a reflection

Last week schools received a circular informing them that the government plans to change the pass requirements for Grade 1- 9 learners, effective this year. For Grade 7-9 it means: 50% or more for the home language (or language of instruction), 40% or more for maths, 50% or more for any two other subjects and 40% or more for any two other subjects.

While this doesn't sound unreasonable in and of itself, and while I applaud the efforts of the Education department to raise standards, there are se… Continue

How does SA fare?

The Sheffield University has a team who have produced a computer programme that alters the map of the world (or the relative size of the countries and continents) based on data available on a particular question. Their results make for very interesting reading. How does SA fare, and where are going if we don't change things fairly soon?

Education: the life or death of our planet

WARNING: This is a long post. But it's about an important matter, so I think you can forgive me.

I am definitely getting pregnancy brain. This afternoon we had a PROGRO, and I forgot about it completely - even though I'm on the committee that organises these sessions for the staff! Sigh!

We were very privileged to have Prof Brian O'Connell as our guest speaker today. He is currently the Rector and Vice-Chancellor at UWC, but he has a very long history in education, having started out as a humb… Continue
