About me
Feeling that there's a need for a space where people can learn the basic principles of personal finance without having to pay for that information, I launched MoreThanMoney about two years ago.

There now is a place where South Africans can ask all those money questions that are bugging them and download some financial tools that are not available for free on any other SA websites.

In my 'day job' I'm a consultant to a number of investment companies.

Recession: No need to get depressed

Sprawling cities, congestion, the race for resources (and a parking spot), more waste than the earth can absorb… Most of us have witnessed the side-effects of an economy growing rapidly year after year. Yes, uninterrupted growth was the myth of the New Economy. But already in 1942 the economist Schumpeter predicted that the capitalist economy cyclically moves towards a point of c

1 May - loved by clockwatchers; loathed by cloaked overtimers

Friday we will be saying good-bye to holiday-ridden April with … yet another public holiday, the worldwide celebration of the improvement in the socio-economic conditions of workers. But were does this holiday come from?

Labour Day has its origin in the British Eight-hour day movement, led by Robert Owen from 1817 for several decades. Its slogan, “Eight hours labour, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest”, illustrates the goals of the movement perfectly. At the time, the working day

Making money in a free-information economy

If you operate in the information or knowledge economy, have only a plain vanilla offering, and don’t really engage with your clients, now may be a good time to change careers. The world has changed (and for the better).

The ivory towers of professional bodies are slowly crumbling as free information is flooding the web, empowering web users en masse and putting downward pressure on the cost of advisory fees. Is this the end of making money from knowledge-sharing? Definitely not, and thousands… Continue

Are we smarter than the experts?

As someone who matriculated in the year Nelson Mandela was set free and the ANC unbanned, questioning text books just happens naturally. I can’t help but to have more faith in collaborative data from a wide range of people, as you would find on Wikipedia, than in any article by only one author. But reading James Surowiecki’s The Wisdom of Crowds this week convinced me that there are at least four prerequisites for a group to function intelligently.

Groups work well when there’s enough:

Ha-ha, I remember that question! Well, I guess it can't all be serious stuff on there - I hope not.
Thanks for the question on shares - I'll answer that one over the weekend if nobody else does.

Hiya Lizelle...

Thanks so much for your kind comment!

And yeah... What I do in meetings and conferences is very high-adrenalin, high-performance, high-concentration fun!

If anyone had asked me to imagine my ideal job, I don't think I would have dared to visualise this!

Thanks for your comment!

Blue skies, love, Roy
