Threats and opportunities for Africa in the digital era

ACCRA, Ghana – Youthful audiences consuming media using digital channels are not interested in identifying with their countries or ethnic groups and are likely to fashion their own language of communication, African media bosses heard this week.

“The digital natives will not identify with their tribes, less with their country, but more with the interests of their virtual communities,” said Linus Gitahi, group chief executive officer of Nation Media Group which has multi-media operations in Keny… Continue

Hear, hear!! The thing is, I've been using the TGI database and software [which you don't have to be a statistical giant to operate] and am finding that more and more brand marketers are letting their subscriptions lapse, becuase they don't/won't invest the time in making the data work for them - they'd rather just keep doing what they've always done... relying on vertical/horizontal percentages ex AMPS. I'd love to send you some of the in-depth data insight work I've done and hear your views on its usefulness and applications to brand & campaign strategy??... obviously the content is confidential, so I'd need to take it off-line - let me know if you're up for it?

Hello Dave - thanks so much for your interest... at present, I'm really only fiddling with data to keep clients in their comfort zone and earn a living (!) and I'm experiencing a real resistence to empirical evidence that requires marketers to do things differently. In fact, I've joined your community in the hope of connecting with people who can testify that the tide is changing and that big brand marketers are willing to trust the data and/or try something new??

Very interesting. Yeah the expected connectivity growth in Southern Africa, and resultant media and business opportunities that this will present are very interesting and exciting. Our company already has a footprint across Southern Africa, and publishes for SADC as well, and we are gearing for heightened activity, especially the move to electronic/digital and networked media.

Hi Dave, great stuff, yeah our operations B&T Directories and A C Braby Botswana publish a range of print business directories, maps and brochure/magazine publications. So the online directory is a new addition. Internet connectivity and 3G mobile is also exploding there, almost every 2nd billboard is promoting this. All the best.
